In this role, you will provide professional social work services for offenders in a large correctional facility, including offenders in protective custody.
What can I expect to do in this role?
As a Social Worker, you will:
• formulate discharge plans in full collaboration with professionals and offenders
• provide crisis intervention services
• prepare and maintain assessments and statistical reports
• develop and operate in-house rehabilitative programs and Accredited Core Rehabilitative Programs
• participate in social work research activities and evaluate treatment programs and services
• provide social work consultation and training to staff
How do I qualify?
Mandatory Requirements:
• you are registered as a Social Worker in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW)
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
• you have demonstrated experience applying social work theories, principles and practices normally acquired through a Bachelor of Social Work or Master of Social Work
• you understand community support services to assist in formulating discharge plans
• you have the experience and ability to work with offenders
Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
• you communicate effectively and can prepare and present clinical and related information, reports and discharge plans in a clear and concise manner
• you use your interpersonal skills to advocate on behalf of offender in the institution or community, when motivating and counselling offenders, and other concerned parties
• you demonstrate tact, discretion and sensitivity when discussing problems and options with offenders in crisis
Other Essential Skills:
• you use your well developed analytical and problem solving skills to gather and compile data from multiple sources, identify offender needs and recommend appropriate classification of offenders
• you can interpret and apply relevant legislation and policies (i.e. Ministry of Correctional Services Act, institutional ministry policies, procedures, rules of confidentiality)
• you can manage your workload and priorities to meet the needs of treatment team
• you can manage conflict, apply intervention and program treatment services
• you are proficient in using computers and related software programs (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OTIS, LSI-OR)
