Recognizing that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, differences of opinion are to be expected. The criteria for ranking golf courses are as varied as the courses themselves, with some ranking agencies using course difficulty, others rewarding aesthetics, customer service, membership and / or practice facilities. The fact of the matter is that there is simply no one correct or fair way to objectively compare or rank golf courses.

Hearing the rave reviews of other golfers, seeing championship courses profiled on TV or showcased in the print media usually piques golfer interest and spurs wanderlust – something akin to a treasure hunt, with everyone trying to find a hidden gem. Just as often, the hype announcing the opening of new golf courses is sufficient cause for many duffers to toss their clubs in the trunk and head for the “latest and greatest” layout.

Golf Course Rating Criteria

Setting: Geographic qualities contributing to course design, appearance and backdrops.
Conditioning: The overall conditions of the tee boxes, fairways, rough, bunkers and greens.
Design: Variety in hole shape, difficulty, length, slope, hazards in play, contours of greens.
Shot making: Test of accuracy and length using all clubs without overemphasizing one.
Scoring: The overall difficulty of the course for players of all abilities using different tee boxes.
Practice facilities: Driving range, putting and / or chipping green(s), practice bunker(s) on site.
Ambience: Impressions and memories of the course, combined with its scenic vistas.
